UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation was founded in London on 16th November 1945 and became operational in 1946. As a specialised organisation of the UNO it grew out of a common purpose to contribute to peacekeeping, respect for Human Rights and equality among peoples through the channels of Education, Science, Culture and Communications. The Preamble to the Constitution states that "since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed".

The World Heritage Convention was adopted during the 1972 UNESCO General Conference. Almost 180 nations already belong to the Convention, thus transforming it into one of the major international instruments for protecting cultural and natural heritage.

San Gimignano was acknowledged as World Heritage in 1990, the first town in the Province of Siena to receive this honour.
