Associazione Strutture ExtraAlberghiere di San Gimignano
A typical feature of the town, recognised worldwide, is the exceptional skyline with its towers standing out against the sky. Of the seventy-two mediaeval towers of 1325 only seventeen remain – two of them tower-houses – to perpetuate the image of San Gimignano over the years. The town is world famous not only for its special architecture but also and above all for the richness of the artworks it has soberly preserved and for Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a rare white wine which has been exclusively produced here since the middle ages when it was already being drunk by Pope Martinus IV to "wash down" the eels he liked to eat.
San Gimignano is the birthplace of the mediaeval poet Folgóre da San Gimignano and of Filippo Buonaccorsi, known as Callimachus, personal counsellor to Casimir IV, king of Poland.
